White Haven Motor Lodge Neon Sign Shines Brightly

The neon sign in front of the White Haven Motor Lodge in Overland Park, Kansas shines just a couple of nights before an auction will dim the lights,forever. The place opened in 1957 and closed recently.

Motel Landmark to Close

The White Haven Motor Lodge in Overland Park, Ks is closing. The landmark motel opened in 1957. All contents and even the big sign will be auctioned soon.


These photos were made in September 2009 using an Olympus Stylus 770 SW and an 092 Infra-red filter. I tested many digital cameras and found the Oly 770 gives IR results very close to what I used to get using Kodak IR film. The first shot shows how the image looks straight out of the camera and then converted to b&w.

Sign of the Times

A long time ago I worked for the New Times newspaper in K.C., Mo. Each week I came up with a photo that stood alone and was simply called Sign of the Times. I plan to put a few of the better ones here along with some I have shot since then, like these.

Kansas Sightings on Highway 50

I was traveling between Emporia and Newton on Kansas Highway 50 recently and spotted a few interesting things worth stopping and photographing.
The first was an old stone one-room school house, about 35 miles east of Newton. The school was built in 1896 for District 34.



Later, west of Strong City I saw what I thought were Texas Longhorn cattle in a field. I stopped and realized they were some other kind of cattle. A sign said the large building up the drive was the Clover Cliff Ranch. I believe from research I did on the net that these are Ankole Watusi, originally from Africa.
